Portugal names squad, William handed chance

LISBON, Portugal — Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho received his first call-up by Portugal for the World Cup qualifying playoffs against Sweden.

Coach Paulo Bento also included 19-year-old Galatasaray striker Bruma in his 24-man squad for a second time.

Zenit St. Petersburg striker Danny is out with a muscle strain but otherwise Portugal is at full strength, with Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao and Valencia right back Joao Pereira expected to recover from injuries in time.

The first leg is next Friday in Lisbon, with the return leg four days later in Solna.

Portugal and Sweden finished second in their qualifying groups behind Russia and Germany, respectively.
