Portugal unhappy with Chelsea, Scolari

NEUCHATEL, Switzerland — Chelsea lacked respect for Portugal when it announced Luiz Felipe Scolari as its new coach in the middle of the European Championship, the president of the Portuguese football federation said Friday.

A day after Portugal’s 3-2 loss to Germany in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, Gilberto Madail said he knew the Brazilian would leave for Chelsea, but was surprised by the timing of the announcement.

"The club could’ve told the federation in advance," Madail said at the team’s training base.

"There was no way to avoid it, we arrived with the certainty that Scolari would not continue," Madail said. "But the announcement came at an inopportune moment."

Madail also said Scolari "had nothing to do" with the timing of the announcement, and revealed that the coach already had offers from "Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona."
