LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Freddy Adu came on to score the tying goal in Benfica’s 1-1 draw with Setubal in a fourth-round, first-leg match of the Portuguese league cup on Saturday.
The U.S. international angled his shot home in injury time to equalize after appearing as a substitute in the 71st minute. Matheus earlier gave the visitors a 12th-minute lead.
Adu also scored a late equalizer in the previous round against Amadora in September. Benfica went on to win that game on penalties.
The 18-year-old, one of the highest-profile players in U.S. soccer, has seen little action since joining the Lisbon club from MLS’s Real Salt Lake in July. He made his league debut as a substitute last month and also played in one UEFA Champions League game in August, again as a substitute.
In Saturday’s other match, Benfica’s cross-town rival Sporting suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to visiting second division team Fatima.
Fatima, which eliminated league champion FC Porto in the previous round, took a 15th-minute lead through Cicero.
After Liedson equalized for the home team in the 53rd, Filipe Falardo fired a long-range shot for Fatima’s winning goal in the 82nd.
The second leg matches are scheduled for Oct. 31.
On Sunday, its Penafiel versus Leiria and Portimonense versus Beira-Mar.
