CARY, N.C. — Brian Shriver scored in the 88th minute, giving the Carolina Railhawks a 2-1 upset over the MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night.
Shriver’s shot from 15 yards on the right side got through goalie Bill Gaudette.
The loss was the Galaxy’s eighth straight (0-6-2). The Railhawks are winless (0-5-4) in the North American Soccer League this season.
Pat Noonan scored on an assist from Chad Barrett in the 38th minute for LA.
But Ty Shipilane tied it in the 75th minute from five yards on the right side, assisted by Zach Schilawski.
The Galaxy, which won Cups in 2001 and 2005, were without David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane.
New York 3, Charleston 0
DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. — Kenny Cooper and Heath Pearce each scored in the first half to lead the New York Red Bulls of MLS past the Charleston Battery 3-0 Tuesday night in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
This was New York’s first win over the Battery, a team from the USL Pro Division, in three U.S. Open Cup matches.
Cooper opened the scoring in the 14th minute. After a strong build up, New York’s Jhonny Arteaga found Cooper inside the 18-yard box. Cooper chested down the ball, pivoted and ripped a shot past goalkeeper Brock Duckworth.
The Red Bulls extended the lead to 2-0 on Pearce’s goal off an assist from Dax McCarty in the 41st minute.
New York’s Connor Lade finished the scoring in the 71st minute.
Harrisburg 4, New England 3 (PK)
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Andrew Marshall scored in the fifth round of penalty kicks, and the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL Pro Division knocked off the New England Revolution 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night.
Harrisburg rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second half to defeat the MLS’s Revolution in a game delayed 30 minutes due to rain. The City Islanders capped the comeback when goalkeeper Nick Noble stopped New England’s Benny Feilhaber on the last penalty kick.
Harrisburg advances to face New York of the MLS. The Red Bulls defeated the Charleston Battery, also of the USL Pro Division, 3-0 on Tuesday.
Feilhaber scored to give New England the 3-0 lead before the hosts rallied. J.T. Noone, Sainey Touray, and Brian Ombiji scored to tie it for Harrisburg.
The game was scoreless at halftime.
Minnesota 3, Salt Lake City 1
SANDY, Utah — Minnesota took the lead on Kevin Venegas’ goal in the opening minutes and dealt Real Salt Lake a 3-1 loss Tuesday night in the US Open Cup.
Also losing from MLS in the third round were Chicago, New England, Los Angeles, Dallas, Columbus and Houston against lower-division opponents.
The Stars grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third minute on Venegas’ header during a scramble. Salt Lake evened the score in the 29th minute on Luis Gil’s shot from the top of the penalty area.
Just before halftime, RSL defender Jamison Olave committed a handball and Neil Hlavaty buried the penalty kick it in the upper left corner of the net.
The lead ballooned to 3-1 in the 58th minute when Simone Bracalello latched onto a cross and sent the ball past goalkeeper Kyle Reynish.
San Jose 2, Fort Lauderdale 1
STANFORD, Calif. — Sam Garza scored his first two professional goals and the San Jose Earthquakes staged a second-half comeback to beat the second-division Fort Lauderdale Strikers 2-1 Tuesday in a third-round U.S. Open Cup match.
Garza connected in the 63rd and 70th minutes to help the Earthquakes recover from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Mark Anderson put ahead the Strikers, a North American Soccer League club, in the 38th minute.
The Earthquakes will host the NASL’s Minnesota Stars in a fourth-round match next Tuesday at Stanford’s Colgan Stadium.
Garza, the No. 6 pick in this year’s MLS draft, converted a pass from Simon Dawkins along the top of Fort Lauderdale’s penalty area for his first goal. His second goal came when a deflected San Jose shot fell to him at 22 yards.
Anderson’s hardest-hit shot, a 74th-minute attempt from 15 yards, was pushed over the crossbar by leaping goalkeeper David Bingham.
Charlotte 2, Dallas 0
FRISCO, Texas — Clinton Irwin made 10 saves, leading the Charlotte Eagles to a 2-0 upset over FC Dallas of MLS on Tuesday night.
It was Irwin’s second consecutive shutout in the U.S. Open Cup, allowing the USL Pro’s Eagles to advance to the quarterfinals against another lower-division team, the NASL’s San Antonio Scorpions.
Charlotte put only two shots on Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz, but scored on both.
Darryl Roberts headed in Nate Thornton’s cross from the right corner in the 43rd minute. In stoppage time after the second half, Roberts passed to Thornton for the second goal.
FC Dallas played a man short for the final 12 minutes after Jackson received a red card.
Kansas City 3, Orlando 2
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Soony Saad scored twice in a four-minute span in the second half, and Sporting Kansas City held on for a 3-2 victory over short-handed Orlando City SC on Tuesday night in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Saad put Sporting up 2-1 in the 65th, then made it 3-1 in the 69th. Paulo Nagamura also scored in first-half stoppage time for Sporting.
Orlando City, which plays in the third-tier USL Pro league, got goals from Kevin Molino in the 55th minute and Dennis Chin in the 84th. The Lions had to play a man down after Anthony Pulis drew a straight red card in the 70th minute for throwing an elbow at Sporting’s Lawrence Olum.
Sporting will host the Colorado Rapids on June 5 in the fourth round.
San Antonio 1, Houston 0
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Scorpions beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup, scoring on a penalty kick by Hans Denissen on Tuesday night.
In their first year as a franchise, the Scorpions of the NASL outworked the veteran Dynamo of MLS in a physical game. Six yellow cards were assessed, including one that set up the goal in the 51st minute.
Scorpions forward Denissen’s shot from 12 yards hit the top of the crossbar, bouncing down and into the goal past a diving Tyler Deric. The goal was set up when Dynamo defender Warren Creavalle took down Pablo Campos as he charged toward the net following a flip-kick pass over the defence by Scorpions teammate Kevin Harmse.
Scorpions goaltender Daryl Sattler had five saves, including two in the final minutes to preserve the victory.
Dayton 2, Columbus 1
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Daniel Holowaty came off the bench to set up two goals in the final 11 minutes as the Dayton Dutch Lions defeated the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer 2-1 on Tuesday in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Dayton of the third division US Pro league will play the Chicago Fire-Michigan Bucks winner.
The Crew outshot Dayton 18-3, but had only a 64th minute penalty kick goal by Olman Vargas to show for it.
Holowaty entered in the 78th minute and a minute later set up Jan Gerrit Bartels to tie the score and then sent a crossing pass that Gibson Bardsley converted in the 81st minute.
D.C. 2, Richmond 1
RICHMOND, Va. — Midfielder Marcelo Saragosa scored off a corner kick two minutes into the second 15-minute overtime Tuesday night, giving D.C. United a 2-1 victory over the Richmond Kickers in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Saragosa scored on a header from in front of the net. It beat goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale, whose brilliant play in the second half kept the Kickers in the game.
D.C. United, of MLS, dominated the first half, but was tied 1-1 at halftime. Forward Hamdi Salihi scored for United in the 24th minute. A penalty kick by Richmond midfielder Stanley Nyazamba tied it a few minutes before the break.
Colorado 3, Tampa Bay 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Colorado Rapids advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night with a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Colorado went on top when a loose ball in the Rowdies’ box was touched with his hand by Draymond Washington. Edu scored on ensuing penalty kick in the 17th minute.
In the 33rd minute, Andre Akpan doubled the lead, beating keeper Jeff Attinella from the left edge of the 18-yard box.
Colorado’s Kamani Hill and Tampa Bay’s Matt Clare added goals in the 89th and 92nd minutes.
Michigan 3, Chicago 2
PONTIAC, Mich. — Nermin Crnkic’s extra-time goal gave the Michigan Bucks a 3-2 victory Tuesday night over the Chicago Fire of the MLS in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
The Bucks of the USL Premier Development League took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Tommy Catalano beat Chicago goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi. Michigan outplayed Chicago for most of the first half, but the Fire tied the game on Corben Bone’s goal in the 28th minute.
Federico Puppo’s shot from the edge of the box in the 51st minute gave the Fire a 2-1 lead, but Nate Boyden’s header forced extra time in the 78th minute.
Crnkic hit the winning goal in the third minute of extra time.
Chivas 1, Ventura County 0
VENTURA, Calif. — Cesar Romero scored in the 13th minute, lifting Chivas USA past the Ventura County Fusion 1-0 Tuesday night in the US Open Cup.
Chivas, of MLS, advances to play the Carolina RailHawks, who defeated the LA Galaxy earlier in the evening.
The fourth-division Fusion tested Chivas throughout, but Romero, who was replaced at halftime by Alejandro Moreno, got the only goal.
