Former Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney is finalizing a deal to become the new coach of the LA Galaxy, according to national U.S. soccer journalist Grant Wahl.

Vanney will be returning to the Galaxy – where he spent six years of his playing career from 1996-2002 – to take over a team that’s been without a full-time coach since Guillermo Barros Schelotto was fired on Oct. 29. The Californian club finished 10th in the Western Conference this season and missed the playoffs.

Vanney, 46, stepped down from TFC on Dec. 1 after seven seasons with the team. He helped guide the club to its first playoff campaign in 2015 before reaching three MLS Cup finals and winning the Reds’ first-ever title in 2017. He also won three Canadian Championships and reached the Concacaf Champions League final in 2018.
