Everton striker Wayne Rooney has agreed to a deal in principle with D.C. United, according to multiple reports in England.

Steven Goff of The Washington Post first reported D.C.’s interest in Rooney on Tuesday. Now he is one step closer to moving to MLS.

The transfer fee would be around £12 million (US$16.2 million) which would be the most expensive signing in MLS history. It would eclipse the $15 million spent by Atlanta United on Argentine teenager Ezequiel Barco back in January.

The Daily Mirror also reported that Rooney’s potential salary would be about £3 million ($4 million USD) per season. He currently makes around five times that amount at Everton.

Rooney, 32, returned to his boyhood club Everton last summer from Manchester United after 13 years with the club. He is the record scorer for United and England with 253 goals and 53 goals, respectively.

In 31 games for Everton this season, Rooney has scored 10 goals in what’s been a tumultuous season for the Toffees.
