SAO PAULO — Former striker Romario will have to pay nearly US$17,000 for attacking a fan who threw chickens at players as a protest six years ago, a Brazilian court ruled Tuesday.
A lower court had already ordered him to pay damages to the fan, and Romario has now lost his appeal.
The disgruntled Fluminense fan, upset with the team’s struggles at the time, threw six live chickens onto the field during a practice session.
Romario was upset and went into the stands to confront the fan, throwing punches and kicking him. A Fluminense trainer also attacked the fan along with Romario.
