GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany — Schalke general manager Horst Heldt says Germany defender Dennis Aogo is on the verge of joining from Bundesliga rival Hamburger SV.
Heldt says Schalke is signing the 26-year-old Aogo on loan for one year with the option to make the move permanent, subject to a medical later Wednesday.
Schalke, which qualified for the Champions League group stage on Tuesday with a 4-3 aggregate win over Greek side PAOK, was in the market for a left-sided player following the departure of Lyon’s on-loan Brazilian, Michel Bastos, to United Arab Emirates side Al Ain.
Aogo can play on the left of defence or midfield, and could make his Schalke debut Saturday against Bayer Leverkusen.
Aogo made 133 Bundesliga appearances for Hamburg since joining from Freiburg in 2008.
He has made 12 appearances for Germany.
