MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Police released images Tuesday of 49 suspects wanted in connection with rioting at last year’s UEFA Cup final in Manchester.
The photographs were posted on Greater Manchester Police’s website in hopes that members of the public will identify the troublemakers.
Fighting broke out in the streets of the city on the day Zenit St. Petersburg beat Glasgow Rangers 2-0 at the home of Manchester City, leaving 15 police officers injured.
Police said 150,000 Rangers fans travelled to Manchester for the final, most of them without tickets. Trouble broke out when a giant screen being used to televise the game didn’t work.
“May 14, 2008 is a night when shameful violence marred what should have been a wonderful football showcase,” said Police Supt. Geoff Wessell, who is leading the investigation.
“We now want the public’s help in putting names to the faces of the people we believe were involved in the violence. Those featured in the images were involved in violence ranging from attacks on police officers and property to general disorder.”
