SEATTLE — Sigi Schmid has been named the first coach of the Seattle Sounders FC after leading the Columbus Crew to the Major League Soccer championship last month.

The club announced the hiring of the 55-year-old Schmid on Tuesday after several days of speculation. Schmid agreed to a multi-year contract with the expansion Sounders, who open training camp in late January and will begin MLS play next March. Terms were not disclosed.

Schmid is the defending MLS coach of the year. His 113 coaching victories rank second in MLS history behind current U.S. national team coach Bob Bradley’s 124.
