LISBON, Portugal — Former Belgium and Anderlecht coach Frank Vercauteren is taking charge at Sporting Lisbon.
The Portuguese club says the 55-year-old Belgian will start work on Oct. 30 with a contract through the end of the season.
Vercauteren won two Belgian league titles with Anderlecht and had a spell as caretaker coach of Belgium’s national team in 2009.
Sporting has had a caretaker coach since Ricardo Sa Pinto left at the beginning of the month after a string of poor results.
The club is 12th in the 16-club Portuguese league, with only one win from six games. It hasn’t won the Portuguese league title since the 2001-02 season.
Sporting is also playing in the Europa League.
