Sunderland signs Bayern defender Kirchhoff

SUNDERLAND, England — Sunderland has signed Bayern Munich defender Jan Kirchhoff for an undisclosed fee.

The English Premier League side announced Thursday it had signed central defender Kirchhoff on an 18-month contract until June 2017.

The former Germany under-21 player began his career at FC Mainz where he made 58 appearances for the first team.

He moved to Bayern Munich in 2013 and also had two loan spells at Schalke.
