Canadian Will Johnson is the newest member of the Toronto FC.
Johnson was acquired by the Reds from the Portland Timbers in exchange for a conditional second-round pick in 2017 and targeted allocation money.
The terms of the deal have not been released.
“I’m excited to return to my hometown of Toronto and play in front of one of the best fan bases in MLS,” said Johnson. “I look forward to this new challenge and cannot wait to meet my new teammates.”
The Canadian midfielder brings a wealth of experience to a club with championship aspirations.
“The addition of Will Johnson will help strengthen our goal of developing a winning culture and spirit here at Toronto FC,” said Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a press release. “He represents another significant piece as we continue to build a championship caliber club.”
Johnson made a combined 208 appearances in the MLS, scoring 27 goals and dishing out 16 assists. Along the way he won two MLS Cups, the most recent with the Timbers who captured their first MLS Cup Championship this past season.
He also has three all-star selections in 2009, 2013 and 2014. Add to that two years in the Eredivisie, and Toronto FC have found a reliable midfield option.
This trade came on the heels of another acquisition by TFC that saw defender Steven Beitashour make his way to the Reds from the Vancouver Whitecaps.
