MONTREAL — Chris Brown scored in the 45th minute to give the Portland Timbers a 1-0 win over the Montreal Impact in United Soccer Leagues First Division action Friday.
Brown beat Impact goalkeeper Matt Jordan with a high shot to his right, disappointing the crowd of 13,034 at Saputo Stadium. Brown’s goal came after a poor clearing attempt from Montreal’s defence.
The Impact (2-5-1) outshot the Timbers 22-7, but couldn’t solve goaltender Raymond Burse as Portland improved to 3-2-4.
Burse had to be particularly impressive in the opening minutes of the second half. Impact forward Charles Gbeke took a point blank shot in the 47th minute, but Burse dove to his left and made the save.
Less than two minutes later, Impact midfielder Joey Gjertsen took a volley shot inside the 18-yard box that hit the bar to the left of Burse.
Montreal has not scored in its last five games.
