TFC surprised by De Rosario trial at Celtic

TORONTO — Dwayne De Rosario can expect to hear from Toronto FC very soon.

The Major League Soccer club said Tuesday it plans to contact its captain amid news De Rosario is on trial in Scotland with Celtic.

The 32-year-old is under contract with Toronto FC and would require permission before working out with Celtic.

"We were unaware of Dwayne’s plan to train with Celtic and we will contact them to understand the situation," Toronto FC said in a statement. "Obviously, if there is interest in a short-term loan arrangement by either him or Celtic, they will need to approach us and the league formally and we will consider based on what is in TFC’s best interest."

De Rosario has been Toronto FC’s leading scorer the past two seasons and has made it clear he’s not entirely happy with his salary.

The Toronto native arrived at Celtic’s Lennoxtown training complex on Tuesday, and Celtic manager Neil Lennon said the Canadian was expected to train with the team for a week.

"He’s a similar player to Shaun Maloney," Lennon told reporters Tuesday. "He likes to play off the left and come inside. He is a skilful, sharp and intelligent player. Again, it’s an opportunity for us to have a look."

In a 3-2 loss to San Jose late last season, De Rosario celebrated a goal by pretending to write a cheque, an action he later apologized for.

He’s Toronto’s all-time leading scorer with 31 goals.

De Rosario joined former Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg at Lennoxtown, who’s also there on trial. Ljungberg played two seasons in the MLS with the Seattle Sounders before being traded to the Chicago Fire in July.
