Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco will be officially unveiled as Major League Soccer’s most valuable player during a special ceremony held at Air Canada Centre on Wednesday morning.
TFC sent out a press release on Tuesday promising a “major announcement” from MLS. Todd Durbin, the league’s executive VP of player relations, is scheduled to be on hand as part of the proceedings.
Giovinco will be in attendance to personally receive the award after recently returning to Toronto from a family vacation in Aruba.

That Giovinco will pick up the league’s MVP award hardly comes as a surprise.
The Italian had one of the best individual seasons in MLS history in 2015, as he led the league in scoring (22 goals), assists (16) and shots (181). He became the first player in league history to reach 20-plus goals and 10-plus assists in a single year. He also set a new MLS single-season record for most combined goals and assists (38) and helped TFC clinch its first ever playoff berth.
Other finalists for the MVP award are Columbus Crew forward Kei Kamara, who also scored 22 goals during the regular season, and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber. Giovinco won the Golden Boot award as the league’s top scorer because he had more assists than Kamara.
Last week Giovinco won the MLS Newcomer of the Year honour, given to a player who has professional experience in another league and enjoyed an outstanding debut season in MLS. On Sunday, he was named to the MLS Best XI, the league’s first all-star team.
