Real Madrid won a record-extending 11th Champions League title on Saturday thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty in the shootout.
Despite his invisibility throughout the match, the Portuguese superstar was clutch when it mattered the most in order to win the third European Cup victory of his career. Even though it wasn’t his best performance, Twitter still acknowledged Ronaldo’s impact.
However, Atletico Madrid’s admirable showing still garnered praise after another heartbreaking defeat in the final.
Lost in the Ronaldo hysteria was Zinedine Zidane, who was managing Real Madrid Castilla, the big club’s reserve team, just five months ago. Now, he has earned his first trophy as a manager.
And if there was any doubt, Madrid seems to be soccer’s evil empire.
It may not have been pretty and many fans may not approve, but Madrid is the champion of Europe for another year.
