VALENCIA, Spain — Valencia defender Jeremy Mathieu has extended his contract until the end of the 2016-17 season.
Mathieu had been linked with a possible transfer to Barcelona after successfully moving from the left wing to become a central defender last season.
He says “I am very happy to have renewed with Valencia. I’m very comfortable to continue here for several more years.”
The 29-year-old Mathieu joined the Spanish club from Toulouse in 2009.
Valencia will play in the Europa League next season after finishing fifth in the Spanish league.
