WOLFSBURG, Germany — Wolfsburg police say Wolfsburg midfielder and Belgium youth international Junior Malanda was killed in a car crash on Saturday.
Wolfsburg police official Thomas Schmidtke told the Associated Press that Malanda was killed, and said the crash occurred near Bielefeld in western Germany. He was unable to give further details.
German daily Bild reports on its website that the 20-year-old Malanda was a passenger in the back seat of a Volkswagen Touareg that came off the motorway and crashed into a tree near Bielefeld.
Bild says the driver and another passenger were seriously injured and taken to hospital, while Malanda was killed instantly.
Bielefeld police officer Joerg Haeckel says police could not confirm or deny the report until next of kin were informed.
