Portugal’s disappointing end at the World Cup has its share of controversy, as superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was caught spitting towards a camera after the final whistle.
Ronaldo, who was ineffective in the loss and leaves South Africa with just one goal, ignored the camera before turning and spitting in its direction. The midfielder then turned away and continued to walk off the field.
The British tabloids, who still hold a grudge after Ronaldo played a part in having Englishman Wayne Rooney sent off at the 2006 World Cup, crucified the Real Madrid player with headlines like, “Cristiano Ronaldo’s Spitting Mad at TV Camera after Portugal Exit” and “Ron in world of shame after spit.”
The petulance of Ronaldo continued post-match when he told reporters to consult coach Carlos Queiroz for answers to the team’s exit. He later softened his stance, saying that the Queiroz remarks were “innocent.”
The win for Spain sets up a quarter-final meeting with Paraguay while Portugal will travel home and begin planning for the 2012 European Championship in Ukraine/Poland.
