QUEBEC — A pair of Canadian tennis player’s squared off at the Bell Challenge tournament on Wednesday.
Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino beat Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round of the singles tournament.
Marino, the fourth seed in the tournament, advances to the quarter-finals with the win and will play Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands.
Krjicek defeated France’s Julie Coin 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 earlier Wednesday.
Also, Austria’s Tamira Paszek downed American Varvara Lepchenko 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Britain’s Heather Watson defeated Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson 7-5, 6-3 in the final match of the day.
In doubles action, Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., and Coin were knocked out in the first round of the doubles tournament by Latvia’s Liga Dekmeijere and American Alexandra Mueller 6-0, 3-6, 12-10.
Later, third-seeded Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic downed Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic and American Melanie Oudin 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.
Americans Megan Moulton-Levy and Lindsay Lee-Waters beat Luxembourg’s Anne Kremer and American Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles quarter-final play, top-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears dropped Hungary’s Melinda Czink and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6 tiebreak.
