Wozniak rolls into second round at Bell

QUEBEC — Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak advanced to the second round of the $220,000 WTA Bell Challenge tennis tournament with a lopsided victory over American qualifier Gail Brodsky on Tuesday.

Wozniak, from Blainville, Que., beat Brodsky 6-2, 6-1, converting five of six break points in a match that lasted 57 minutes 20 seconds. Brodsky failed to convert any of her five break point opportunities.

Wozniak will face fourth seed Rebecca Marino of Vancouver in the second round.

Later Tuesday, Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., fell 6-1, 6-7 (0), 6-3 to Varvara Lepchenko of the United States.

Five of the tournament’s top six seeds were in action Tuesday, and all advanced to the second round.

Top seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia beat Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-0, 2-6, 6-4; No. 2 Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic downed American Jill Craybas 6-2, 6-1; No. 3 Tamira Paszek of Austria defeated American Ashley Weinhold 6-0, 4-6, 6-2; No. 5 Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden beat Russia’s Elena Bovina 2-6, 6-1, 6-2; and No. 6 Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic beat China’s Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-2.

No. 8 Anna Tatishvili of Georgia was the only seeded player to lose, falling 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to French qualifier Julie Coin.

In other results: New Zealand’s Mariana Erakovic beat France’s Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic beat American Jamie Hampton 6-4, 6-2; and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic beat American Melanie Oudin 6-1, 6-3.
