Eugenie Bouchard defeated Shuai Peng 6-2, 6-2 and advanced to the third round at the BNP Paribas Open Friday.

Bouchard, seeded 18th, needed just over an hour to take out Peng for her first career win at the Indian Wells tournament.

The Canadian struggled with her serve, making only 50 per cent of first serves, but winning 85 per cent of the points when she did. After winning five of 10 break points, Bouchard used her second match point to defeat Peng, 40th in the WTA rankings.

The 20-year-old Westmount, Que. native will next face Sara Errani of Italy, seeded ninth, who defeated Torontonian Sharon Fichman 6-1, 6-1 in her opening match. Bouchard has played Errani once before, at last year’s Acapulco Open, with the Italian winning the clay court match 7-6 (4), 6-2.
