HASSELT, Belgium — Canada and Belgium split the opening two matches of their Fed Cup World Group II playoff Saturday, leaving the result to be determined by Sunday’s reverse singles and doubles play.

Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., started Canada off on the right foot with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Tamaryn Hendler on indoor clay courts at the Grenslandhallen.

But Yanina Wickmayer pulled the Belgians even with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que.

Wozniak faces Wickmayer while Dubois takes on Hendler on Sunday. Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Valerie Tetreault of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., meet Kirsten Flipkens and An-Sophie Mestach in doubles.

The winner advances to World Group II, the second eight-country grouping behind the top tier World Group.

The loser is relegated to Zonal Group I for 2010.
