LIMA, Peru — Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont., won while Bruno Agostinelli of Niagara Falls, Ont., was defeated as Canada and Peru found themselves knotted 1-1 after Friday’s action in the Davis Cup Americas Zone Group I playoff tennis tie.

Polansky opened the tie with a 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ivan Miranda to give Canada the early edge. Polansky, ranked No. 230 in the world, looked comfortable on the clay court after spending his past few weeks of tournament play adjusting to the surface.

Peru drew level when Agostinelli fell 6-2, 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-5 to Luis Horna, ranked No. 367 in the world. After dropping the opening set, Agostinelli had opportunities to level the match in the second set but couldn’t convert against Peru’s top player and former world No. 33.

On Saturday, Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Frederic Niemeyer of Sherbrooke, Que., meet Horna and Miranda in doubles play. it will be Nestor’s first action since he paired with Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic to defend their Wimbledon men’s doubles title last week.

A win for Canada against Peru would maintain its spot in the Americas Zone Group I for 2010. Only 16 countries entered in Davis Cup competition will qualify for the elite World Group.
