QUEBEC CITY — No. 5 seed Olga Govortsova of Belarus advanced to the quarter-finals of the Bell Challenge women’s tennis tournament Wednesday after Russian opponent Alina Jidkova retired with dizziness.

Govortsova was leading Jidkova 6-3, 5-0 when the Russian veteran quit.

Govortsova started the year ranked 334th but some solid play this season has vaulted her to No. 50. Beating Jidkova landed the 19-year-old Govortsova in her fourth quarter-final of the year.

Two seeds were upset in first-round matches as fourth-seeded American Meilen Tu lost to Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 6-2, and sixth-seeded Alize Cornet of France was defeated by American qualifier Julie Ditty 7-5, 6-3.

In other first-round action, Maret Ani of Estonia beat Andreja Klepac of Slovenia 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
