STUTTGART, Germany — Eighth-seeded Martin Klizan of Slovakia swept past Albert Montanes of Spain 6-2, 6-3 on Monday to progress to the second round of the Mercedes Cup.
Klizan didn’t drop serve to win in 76 minutes and set up a meeting with another Spaniard, Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated Tobias Kamke of Germany, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Michael Berrer, the 153rd-ranked German who received a wild card into the tournament, topped Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Top-seeded and local favourite Tommy Haas has a bye into the second round.
