Linette beats Diyas to reach Japan Open quarters

TOKYO — Magda Linette of Poland defeated Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 6-2, 7-5 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Japan Open.

Linette saved three of six break points en route to ousting the tournament’s second-seeded player in 1 hour, 24 minutes at Ariake Colosseum.

Linette next faces Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan, who beat local favourite Kurumi Nara 6-2, 6-4.

Also, Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine outlasted Australian Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Bondarenko will face Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Zheng Saisai of China beat Irina Falconi of the United States 6-4, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal with sixth-seeded Christina McHale of the United States.
