QUEBEC — World No. 121 Mirjana Lucic-Baroni upset top seed Venus Williams to win the Coupe Banque Nationale final on Sunday.

Lucic-Baroni, from Croatia, beat the American Williams, ranked 20th in the world, 6-4, 6-3 to claim her first WTA singles title in 16 years.

The 34-year-old Williams had won both previous matches between the two players — at the opening round of the U.S. Open in 2002, and at Florianopolis in 2013 — but couldn’t solve Lucic-Baroni in Quebec City on Sunday.

Later in the day, Lucic-Baroni was back on the court, this time in the doubles final with partner Lucie Hradecka. Lucic-Baroni and Hradecka downed second seeds Julia Goerges and Andrea Hlavackova, 6-3 and 7-6 (8).
