Polansky beats Becker, advances at Gatineau

GATINEAU, Que. — Canadian Peter Polansky advanced to the second round of the $15,000 Gatineau National Bank Futures tennis tournament on Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Germany’s Richard Becker.

Polansky, from Thornhill, Ont., is the top-seeded Canadian in the tournament at No. 2. He will face Vancouver’s Filip Peliwo in the second round.

Qualifier George Jecminek of Vancouver also advanced with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over South Korea’s Soong-Jae Cho.

Jecminek picked up the first ATP rankings points of his career. He will face No. 1 Vincent Millot of France in the next round.

Thornhill’s Milan Pokrajac, who received a wildcard into the main draw, defeated Ji Sung Nam of South Korea 6-2, 6-7( 5), 6-2 and will face Belgian Germain Gigounon in the next round.

Canadians Pavel Krainik, Samuel Monette, Mo Niaki and Robert Rotaru all lost their opening round matches.
