Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., is into the third round of the U.S. Open, using his serve to overpower Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-2 on Thursday.

The 20-year-old Shapovalov, who beat Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round for a second straight year at Flushing Meadows, fired 13 aces compared to just one for Laaksonen.

Shapovalov could face No. 13 seed Gael Monfils on Saturday, if Monfils defeats Marius Copil of Romania in his second-round match.
