Stepping foot in the octagon for the first time in over a year, Conor McGregor found himself on the losing end of a UFC bout for the third time in his past six fights.
The former featherweight and lightweight champion was stunned by Dustin Poirier Saturday night at UFC 257, falling via second-round TKO to the man he’d knocked out back in 2014.
Needless to say, the main-event upset caused quite the ripple in the Twitterverse. A look at the sports world’s reaction to Poirier’s sterling finish:
This is what happened, when you change your team, leave the sparring partners who made you a champion and sparring with little kids, far away from reality.
Poirier reminding the world who he is!! Very impressive performance from Dustin, especially utilizing those calf kicks. I don’t think Conor realized what those felt like. #UFC257
That was the first KO/TKO loss of McGregor’s career, but not the first time he’s been outstruck. Khabib, Diaz at UFC 196 and Poirier at UFC 178 all outlanded McGregor, per @AndrewRDavis85.
Poirier’s next fight has to be for the title, either vacant or interim. If Nurmagomedov is really done, you gotta do Poirier vs. Oliveira or Poirier vs. Chandler for the undisputed title.
