Alberta Pandas knock off defending champion UBC Thunderbirds in semis

QUEBEC — There will be a new champion in U Sports women’s volleyball.

The Alberta Pandas earned a 3-1 win against the defending champion UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday in the tournament semifinals.

The Pandas will face Ryerson in Sunday’s championship after the Rams knocked off the Calgary Dinos 3-1 in the other semi.

Kory White had a team-high 15 points as Alberta took its match 25-19, 27-25, 19-25, 25-15.

Erin Corbett had 14.5 points and Vanessa Jarman added 13.5 points for the Pandas. UBC’s Kiera Van Ryk had a game-high 28 points.

Cailin Wark had a team-high 18.5 points and Theanna Vernon produced 17.5 points as Ryerson won its match 25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 25-14.

Kate Pexman led the Dinos with 19 points.

UBC had won seven of the past 10 titles dating back to 2008, with Alberta taking its last championship in 2007. Ryerson has never won.
