AUS executive director explains Loney Bowl decision

Atlantic University Sport Executive Director Phil Currie sits down with Arash Madani to explain the Loney Bowl controversy, and how the process was worked out.

Atlantic University Sport executive director Phil Currie joined Sportsnet’s Arash Madani to give a lengthy explanation for his decision regarding this year’s controversial Loney Bowl, which was won on Tuesday by Acadia University.

Acadia will play Western on Saturday in the Uteck Bowl, with the winner advancing to the Vanier Cup.

But this year’s Loney Bowl was almost cancelled due to St. Mary’s (which lost to Acadia) use of wide receiver Archelaus Jack, who was a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ practice squad until October 2016.

U Sports dictates that any member of a CFL roster after Aug. 15 must wait a year before becoming eligible to play on a Canadian university team, which St. Mary’s took to mean one academic year, not a calendar year.

The Loney Bowl, which was originally scheduled for Nov. 11, was cancelled before reinstated for last Tuesday.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make,” said Currie of the original cancellation.
