The No. 2 ranked Calgary Dinos football team had their undefeated record snapped on Monday, except the loss didn’t come on the field.
The University of Calgary announced that the team is forfeiting its Sept. 5 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears due to academic ineligibility of two student-athletes.
“We are profoundly disappointed by this regrettable mistake, and we will work diligently to re-evaluate our compliance systems to ensure a situation like this does not happen again,” Dinos athletic director Ron Wuotila said in a press release.
The players, who were not named, were made ineligible after discrepancies were found by the university for courses taken last year. The players’ courses were passed but didn’t contribute to the 18 credit hour requirement that was needed to maintain CIS eligibility.
The university reported the mistake but still could face sanctions from the CIS after they wrap up the disciplinary process.
The student-athletes have not played since Calgary’s 71-3 victory over the Golden Bears at the start of the month.
Calgary remains atop the Canada West standings but are now tied with the Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-1 record.
