CALGARY — The University of Calgary named longtime assistant Wayne Harris Jr. as its interim head football coach Friday.
Harris replaces Steve Burrato, who resigned for personal reasons, the school announced.
Harris has been an assistant with the Dinos for 16 seasons over three stints with the team. He’ll oversee the program while Calgary officials continue their search for a full-time coach to replace Blake Nill, who resigned last month then became the head coach at the University of British Columbia.
Harris’s father, Wayne Sr., was a standout linebacker with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders (1961-’72). The younger Harris was a two-sport athlete for the Dinos (football, wrestling) from 1977 to ’81.
He spent four seasons in the CFL with Calgary, B.C., and Toronto before retiring in 1984 and joining the Calgary Board of Education.
Harris has served as the Dinos’ defensive co-ordinator for the past four seasons.
