OTTAWA — Two members of the University of Western Ontario Mustangs earned Canadian Interuniversity Sport football player of the week awards Wednesday for their efforts in a 50-10 win over York last weekend.
Western quarterback Will Finch was named offensive player of the week after completing 32 of 48 passes for three touchdowns and a CIS season-best 547 yards. Acadia running back Thomas Troop, Bishop’s receiver Alexander Fox and Manitoba quarterback Jordan Yantz were also up for the honour.
Finch’s teammate, kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, took the special-teams nod for scoring 20 points and converting all five field-goal attempts. The fifth-year student became the highest-scoring player in CIS history with 422 career points.
Calgary returner Michael Schmidt and kickers Ryan Begin of Acadia and Boris Bede of Laval were also considered.
Mount Allison defensive lineman Jacob LeBlanc was named defensive player of the week. He had two sacks and a game-high 10 1/2 tackles in a 27-24 win over Saint Mary’s.
Laval linebacker Mathieu Masseau, Ottawa lineman Ettore Lattanzio and Calgary defensive back Adam Ballingall were also nominated.
