GUELPH, Ont. – Quarterback Theo Landers threw a touchdown pass, and ran in another as the Guelph Gryphons turned it on in the second half to beat the York Lions 33-18 on Monday in U Sports football action.
Landers connected with Kade Belyk for an 11-yard TD pass in the second quarter before finishing a seven-play, 38-yard drive in the third with a 1-yard plunge to make it 27-12 for the Gryphons (1-1).
Job Reinhart returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown in the third as Guelph scored 23 straight points to break the game open.
Kicker Gabe Ferraro supplied 15 points for the Gryphons with four field goals and three converts, while running back Jewan Jeffrey helped push the offence with 129 rushing yards on 18 carries. Landers went 12 for 19 for 144 passing yards.
QB Brett Hunchak was 31-of-43 passing for 313 yards and a touchdown, but also threw two costly picks for the Lions (0-2), who only mustered up 46 rushing yards compared to 252 for Guelph.
