A silky-smooth deke, a golden layup, and a ‘Hail Mary’ bump.
Here are the best U Sports highlights from the past week:
The UBC Thunderbirds found themselves trailing the No. 2-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies 2-1 heading into the third period on Saturday. Goals from Chase Clayton and Kyler Nachtigall gave the T-Birds their first lead of the game with less than eight minutes to play.
Two minutes later, Sven Butenschon’s stunning goal and third point of the game secured the victory for UBC.
It was a back-and-forth contest on the court between the Toronto Varsity Blues and Laurier Golden Hawks at the Athletic Complex in Waterloo, Ont. on Saturday. Neither team was able to pull away from the opposition until mid-way through the fourth quarter.
Fourth year guard Sarah Dillon snuck behind her defender, cut to the basket, called for the pass and finished in style to put her team ahead by three with 90 seconds to play. Laurier went on to win 74-67.
There were 21 touches after the serve in this epic rally between Laval Rouge et Or and rivals Université de Montréal Caribans.
The most dramatic part came when Laval’s Dany Desroches rushed way beyond the court to get an arm on a ball that seemed destined to hit the floor. His teammate Bruno Lortie quickly came jumping in behind him, sending a point-saving bump back over his head and over the net.
