Jays’ Cabrera will not participate in WBC

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera will not participate in the upcoming World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic.

Cabrera, who signed a two-year $16 million contract with Toronto on November 19 was named to the Dominican’s provisional roster.

However, Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos told the National Post that both Cabrera, and newly acquired relief pitcher Esmil Rogers made it clear that they wanted to be in spring training to acclimatize to the organization.

Cabrera is the reigning All-Star Game MVP, and was having a career season before being suspended 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance.
