AL, NL Cy Young awards: Who you got?

November 14, 2012, 4:49 PM

A knuckleball pitcher has never won the Cy Young award but that could change later today.

New York Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey is looking to make history after a breakout season in which the 38-year-old did posted the best statistical season of his career, even on a team that faded away in the second half of the season.

“To win 20 on a club with struggles is pretty big,” Mets manager Terry Collins told MLB.com “Especially during the times we weren’t hitting, he was still winning games.”

The journeyman Dickey came into the year with a career 41-50 record but put up monster numbers to be in contention for the prestigious prize.

"It would put a silver lining on an otherwise sad season,” Dickey told MLB.com “That’s one. Two is, it’s something fantastic to celebrate with the fan base.

"To be able to almost as a gift give that back to those guys would be a real treat for me. It would mean a lot to the Mets organization, too…So there’s a lot at stake, and what kid doesn’t want to win a Cy Young, right? So I’m hopeful we’ll get a shot at it.”

While Dickey would love to take home the award, he faces some stiff competition from fellow nominees Gio Gonzalez and Clayton Kershaw, two pitchers who put up nearly identical numbers to Dickey’s.
