Padres recall RHP Smith; Boxberger demoted

DENVER — San Diego has recalled RHP Burch Smith from Triple A Tucson before the Padres’ game at the Colorado Rockies.

The 23-year-old Smith was 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings with Tucson. He struck out nine and allowed three earned runs.

During an earlier stay with the parent club, Smith was 0-1 in three starts. The 14th-round selection in the 2011 major league draft had an 18.11 ERA in 7 1-3 innings of work.

San Diego optioned RHP Brad Boxberger to Tucson on Saturday to make room for Smith. Boxberger was 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA in 17 relief appearances.

Boxberger was up with the Padres twice this season.
