The Toronto Raptors turned their fortunes around last season, making the playoffs for the first time in six years, losing to the Brooklyn Nets to seven games in a thrilling series that captured the imagination of the city. By the looks of things, the rest of the nation also took notice.
According to Google data, the Raptors were the most searched team in 2014 within Canada, with the Montreal Canadiens, fuelled by their run into the Eastern Conference final, and Toronto Blue Jays, with their tumultuous season of extreme highs and lows, rounding out the top three.
Interestingly enough for a hockey-mad nation like Canada, Montreal was the only NHL team in the top 10 while the CFL was well-represented, with six of the nine teams making the list.
As far as individual athletes go, Formula One racing legend Michael Schumacher was the most searched in Canada this year – likely because of his 2013 skiing accident and progress throughout the year as he recovered — while tennis star Eugenie Bouchard was the most searched Canadian athlete and the fourth-most searched person in all of the nation.
