CFL Power Rankings Week 15: Alouettes floundering, Argos rising

In part two of Sportsnet’s two-part sit-down interview, CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie clarifies his position on concussions, CTE and CFL player safety.

Heading into the 15th week of the CFL season, the Toronto Argonauts have won two straight for the first time this year while the Montreal Alouettes are reeling after losing seven straight.

Here’s how the league’s nine teams stack up based on recent form.

When you can go on the road and win without scoring a single TD that means you can win ugly and win with defence. Both are true of the 2017 Stampeders. Calgary now has 16 consecutive wins versus West Division teams, including 10 straight wins against the green Riders.

The Bombers look primed to host a first-round playoff game as they jumped up to second in their division. That should concern the rest of the West as Winnipeg has won five straight at Investors Group.

Kevin Glenn returned to action but Brandon Bridge looked better under centre. Despite outplaying the Stampeders for large stretches, they couldn’t execute late when it counts, showing they still are young and inexperienced despite the strides they’ve made under Chris Jones.

Edmonton started the year on a 7-0 run. Then it fell apart and lost five straight. Still the Eskimos sit in third in the West and have a favourable schedule down the stretch after coming off a bye last week.

James Wilder Jr. has gone from special teams player to special player.  His 331 yards rushing over the last two games since being named starter by Marc Trestman surpassed the Argos team record of 290 in back-to-back games, set by Cory Boyd in 2010. Wilder’s crazy 8.4 yards per carry is carrying the Argos back to the top of the East.

B.C. lost a golden opportunity to gain ground on Edmonton during its bye week The Lions now head into their second bye week of the season, and second in a month. To start the month, B.C. looked like it might challenge for first in the west. Now the Lions looks like their sights are set on vying for a crossover playoff spot.

Ryan Lindley may have started games in the NFL but he showed to be in over his head playing the CFL game completing just 16 of his 31 passes for 151 yards in a losing effort versus Winnipeg. Backup Drew Tate and starter Trevor Harris are expected to return to the lineup in the next two weeks.

Hamilton has quickly won three of their last four games. It’s important to note it has a game in hand on most teams in the league. Who needs Johnny Manziel when you have Jeremiah Masoli?

Montreal has lost seven straight games. Less than two months ago the Als were in first place in the East. Now they trail the first-place Argos by six points and second place Redblacks by five points. Both teams already have secured the season series against the Als. The key problem is Darian Durant leads the CFL with 14 interceptions. Montreal’s playoff hopes are virtually done.
