The Toronto Blue Jays announced on December 7, 2012 that Carlos Delgado, the slugger that re-wrote the team’s record book in his 12 seasons with the Jays in the late-90s to early-2000s, will be raised to the team’s level of excellence at the Rogers Centre next summer.

Here, we look back on his storied career as a Toronto Blue Jay.

After getting lucrative offers from several major league teams, Carlos Delgado decides to join the Toronto Blue Jays and he made his debut with the team in 1993. Delgado did not play in the second of Toronto’s back-to-back World Series, but he was still awarded a World Series ring.

Originally signed as a catcher, Delgado would end up at first base after an experiment in left field failed. He would spend the rest of his career at this position.

Delgado blasts a three-run homer, his 39th of the season, against the Minnesota Twins in 1999. He would eventually hit a career-high 44 home runs that year, en route to his first of three Silver Slugger awards.

Delgado’s star continued to rise in 2000 as he cemented his reputation as one of the most productive sluggers in the major leagues. He followed up his 44-home run year with 41, earning him the Hank Aaron award and his second Silver Slugger. He also made his first of two All-Star appearances.

On October 20, 2000, Carlos Delgado agreed to a four-year, $68 million US deal with the Jays, making him the highest paid playing in baseball at the time.

On September 25, 2003, Delgado became the 15th player in major league history to hit four home runs in a single game, doing so against the Tampa Bay Rays.

As the 2004 season, Delgado’s 12th with Toronto, came to a close, Delgado had sole possession of many of the team’s offensive records, including career home runs (336), RBIs (1,058), runs (889) and extra base hits (690) among many others. But despite fan pleas, the Toronto Blue Jays did not pursue Delgado as a free agent that off-season, citing salary restrictions. Delgado, for his part, left Toronto with no grudges, even though he later said that Toronto did not try hard enough to keep him.

It’s a sad day for Jays fans as they watch Carlos Delgado signed a four-year, $52 million contract with the Florida Marlins on January 27, 2005, officially ending his tenure in Toronto. Delgado was later traded to the New York Mets the following year.
