Daily Gallery: Winter meeting movements

While the Toronto Blue Jays have been a mostly quiet bunch at these winter meetings, the rest of the MLB have been pretty busy making some splashes in the trade and free agent departments. And a few significant names changed jersey colours over these last few days.

James Loney was one of the first to change his allegiances when he went from the Boston Red Sox to a divisional rival after reaching an agreement on a one year, $2 million contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Boston Red Sox was one of the first to make the jump into the free agent pool, securing former Texas Rangers catcher Mike Napoli for three years and $39 million. The Red Sox however, is expected to try him as a permanent solution at first base.

The 32-year-old free agent starting pitcher was not on the market for very long. Early Wednesday morning, the Washington Nationals announced that they have signed the right-hander for one year and $13 million. He entered the free agent market after the Los Angeles Angels declined a $15.5 million option, instead buying him out for $3.5 million.

Boston made its second splashy move of these winter meetings as they continued to try and erase the memories of their disastrous 2012 season. A mere day after signing Mike Napoli, the Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians to sign free agent outfielder Shane Victorino to a three year, $39 million deal.

The former Kansas City closer missed the whole 2012 season following elbow ligament-replacement surgery. But that hardly stopped the Texas Rangers from tendering the free agent relief pitcher a two year, $8 million contract in the hopes that the two-time All-Star would at the very least help bolster their bullpen.

After four years with the Houston Astros, the 29-year-old reliever Wilton Lopez was traded to the Colorado Rockies. Houston receives young pitchers Alex White and Alex Gillingham in return.

Ex-Jays Yunel Escobar is back in the AL East after barely two weeks as a Miami Marlin following the Jays-Marlins mega trade. Late Tuesday night, the Marlins announced that they have traded Escobar and his $5 million a year contract to the Tampa Bay Rays for prospect Derek Dietrich.

After he was reportedly told by the New York Yankees, a team he has played with over the last two seasons, that they wished to resign him, Eric Chavez has up and left for a one year, $3 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday afternoon.

The big free agent third base target, whose suitors included the New York Yankees, has decided to don a Chicago White Sox uniform. A solid 2012 season with the Tampa Bay Rays allowed veteran Jeff Keppinger to cash in a three year, $12 million deal.

Canadian left fielder Jason Bay will reportedly be heading west to Seattle after coming to a one-year agreement with the team. He became a free agent after Bay and the New York Mets agreed to terminate his four-year, $66 million contract with one guaranteed year remaining. Seattle’s deal for the BC-native is rumoured to be seven figures.
