The Montreal Canadiens announced Tuesday that they’ve added Craig Ramsay as a consultant to their coaching staff.

Ramsay has over 1,650 games of NHL coaching experience split between the Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins, Atlanta Thrashers and Edmonton Oilers. He joins advisor Clement Jodoin and assistants Dan Lacroix and Jean-Jacques Daigneault as part of head coach Michel Therrien’s staff.

Ramsay was an assistant coach with Tampa when they won the Stanley Cup in 2004. He most recently worked as an assistant coach with Edmonton, but was dismissed from his position in June.

“[Ramsay] has an impressive hockey background having worked as an NHL coach for over 20 years following a playing career that included over 1000 games played,” general manager Marc Bergevin said via press release. “On a consulting basis, he will be called upon regularly during the season to share his knowledge with our coaching group. Our players will also benefit from his expertise.”

A native of Weston, ON, Ramsay was a prolific NHL player. He scored 672 points in 1070 games, adding 48 points in 89 post-season contests. He won the Selke Trophy in 1985 and holds the fourth-longest ironman streak in league history, having appeared in 776 consecutive games from 1973-1983.

The announcement of Ramsay’s hiring comes just a day after the Canadiens added Eric Crawford and Dave Starman to their scouting staff.
