Check out Roberto Luongo’s new mask

The Florida Panthers have new uniforms for the 2016-17 season and their starting goaltender got a new mask to match.

That right there is the helmet Roberto Luongo will be sporting this year, and it features both the growling cat the Panthers have worn since their inception in 1993 and the new closed-mouth logo the team unveiled in June.

Luongo has kept the matte finish he wore last season while adding colour to his sleek design. For reference, here’s what he had in 2015-16:

The new look with the gold, red and blue colour scheme is at least somewhat reminiscent of John Vanbiesbrouck’s classic design from the mid-90s.

The Panthers had originally feared that Luongo might not be able to open the season after the 37-year-old underwent off-season hip surgery, but after making his pre-season debut on Tuesday it looks like he’ll be ready for Florida’s opening game against the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 13.
