Coyotes sign defenceman Luke Schenn to two-year deal

Luke Schenn went a little classic on Tuesday by landing a massive hit on Oliver Ekman-Larsson along the boards that was so big, it was practically thunderous.

The Arizona Coyotes have signed free agent defenceman Luke Schenn to a two-year contract worth $2.5 million.

Schenn spent the past season with the Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings, finishing the season with four goals and 12 assists in 72 games.

He was tied with teammate Dustin Brown for 15th in the league with 234 hits in 2015-16.

The native of Saskatoon, Sask., was taken fifth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2008 NHL Draft and played four seasons in Toronto before being traded to the Flyers for winger James van Riemsdyk.

The Flyers traded Schenn and Vincent Lecavalier to the Kings for Jordan Weal and a third-round pick in January.

A stay-at-home defenceman, Schenn has amassed 28 goals, 100 assists, and 1773 hits in 566 career NHL games and has blocked 924 shots.
