Don Cherry reveals his favourite to win Capitals-Penguins series

Courtesy of PensTV Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby talks about facing Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin in the second round of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Don Cherry isn’t putting blame on Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin as to why their respective teams have only won one Stanley Cup between the two of them.

Asked about it on Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Dean Blundell & Co., Tuesday morning, Cherry said he’s not surprised.

“It’s the teams, not those guys. Because I have to say that Ovechkin, boy, he is a force out there. I mean, he’s not a sweetheart,” Cherry said.

Crosby and Ovechkin are due to face each other in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2009, when the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the Washington Capitals in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Penguins are cruising this post-season, downing the New York Rangers in five games during the first round.

Washington rolled out to a 3-0 series lead before running into a hot goaltender but finished off the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2.

Cherry, the popular face of Hockey Night in Canada‘s Coach’s Corner, says he would like to see Crosby win the Cup and is cheering for the Penguins. But he cautions that it won’t be an easy road.

“When you get around to the finals and semifinals, you better have a hot goaltender, and both teams didn’t have goaltending (before this year) and you got Holtby now and whoever plays for Pittsburgh.

“Man, what a series that’s going to be. What a beauty to watch.”
